Authorities responding to a report of a potential fire in a residence in Henveiru district of Male’ City on Thursday discovered an illegal alcohol making operation.

A police spokesperson said the police received report of smoke rising from a residence in Roashanee Magu at approximately 06:12 am.

The team of police and Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) firemen was dispatched to respond to the potential fire.

According to the spokesperson, the authorities had forced open the door when knocks on the door failed to produce a response.

Once inside, they found the smoke had been rising because someone had been making alcohol.

The police arrested an expatriate male from the scene and seized a number of alcohol-making paraphernalia.

“The case is under investigation by the police,” said the spokesperson.
