Over half of criminal charges in August drug-related

Total 235 criminal charges were filed with courts last August – the biggest share of which involved drug offenses, according to the Prosecutor General’s Office (PGO).

PGO released its statistics for the month of August on Monday.

According to PGO, it received requests for charges in 271 cases in August. 76 cases were accepted, the office decided against charges in 57 cases, and 138 cases were sent back for further clarification.

87 of the cases - making for 30 percent of the total - were drug-related.

In August, the PGO filed 235 charges against 189 people with the courts – more than half of which was drug-related.

  • Drug offenses: 53 percent
  • Theft: 28 percent
  • Sexual violence against children: 5 percent
  • Intimidation: 2 percent
  • Gang violence: 1 percent
  • Other: 11 percent
