Ambassador: Over 170 countries including Maldives reaffirm commitment to one-China policy

The Ambassador of China to Maldives Wang Lixin, on Thursday, has stated that over 170 countries including the Maldives, and a number of international organizations have so far reaffirmed their commitment to one-China policy – expressing support for China in defending its sovereignty and territorial integrity.

The remark was made by the Ambassador in a follow-up press statement on Speaker of the United States (US) House of Representative Nancy Pelosi’s recent visit to Taiwan. Earlier, the Ambassador had issued a statement condemning the visit.

In her follow up statement, Ambassador Wang said that UN General Assembly’s President, Maldivian Foreign Minister Abdulla Shahid and UN’s Secretary-General António Guterres state the organization will continue to adhere to General Assembly Resolution 2758, the centerpiece of which is the one-China principle.

With reference to the strong backing of the countries and international organizations including the UN – Ambassador Wang the in her follow up statement said that their voice not only represents strong support for China, but also the common aspiration in opposing hegemony and safeguarding the authority of UN.

Noting that China and Maldives have always understood and supported each other on issues of our respective core interests and major concerns – Chinese top diplomat in the Maldives also thanked the island nation for its long-standing commitment to one-China policy.

“China is always ready to work together with the Maldives to push forward the bilateral relations based on the solid political foundation to a new level so as to make even greater contributions in promoting world peace and development and safeguarding the international system with the United Nations at the core and the international order based on the international law,” she added.

The one-China policy is the diplomatic acknowledgment of China's position that there is only one sovereign state under the name China and Taiwan is part of China, as opposed to the idea that there are two states.

This is a policy clearly recognized by United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 of 1971.

Since People’s Republic of China was founded in 1949 – 181 countries have established diplomatic relations with the nation on the basis of one China principle.

House Speaker Pelosi flew to Taiwan on a US Airforce passenger jet in early August – becoming the highest-ranking American official to visit the island in 25 years despite China’s strong opposition and serious representations.

In her follow-up statement, Ambassador Wang also stressed that the visit seriously undermined China’s sovereignty, in China's internal affairs, violated diplomatic commitments made by the US to China and jeopardized peace and stability across Taiwan strait.

Therewith, she added that China has every reason to respond with countermeasures to defend its sovereignty and territorial integrity.
