Ambassador: China appreciates Maldivian govt’s commitment to one-China policy

The Ambassador of China to Maldives Wang Lixin, on Friday, stated that the Chinese government appreciates the Maldivian Government’s longstanding commitment to one-China policy.

Via a tweet today, Chinese Embassy in the Maldives revealed that Maldivian Foreign Ministry’s Spokesperson conveyed the government’s position on Speaker of the United States (US) House of Representative Nancy Pelosi’s visit to Taiwan on Thursday.

In this regard, the Embassy detailed that Foreign Ministry reiterated the Maldivian government’s firm commitment to one-China policy – as the foundation of its diplomatic relations with the nation.

“The Maldives remains firmly committed to the One-China Policy, as the foundation of its diplomatic relations with the People’s Republic of China, and will continue to reaffirm this position in the international sphere,” the tweet read.

Retweeting the Embassy’s tweet, Ambassador Wang said that the Chinese government appreciates the Maldivian government’s longstanding commitment to one-China policy.

“We have always supported each other on issues of our respective core interests. Looking forward to much closer and more fruitful cooperation with Maldivian friends,” she added.

House Speaker Pelosi flew to Taiwan on a US Air Force passenger jet on Tuesday despite China’s strong opposition – becoming the highest-ranking American official to visit the island in 25 years.

In a statement released following her arrival at Taiwan – Chinese Foreign Ministry said that her visit is a serious violation of the one-China principle and the provisions of the three China-US joint communiqués. They went onto state that Pelosi’s visit severely impacts the political foundation of China-US relations and seriously infringes upon China’s sovereignty and territorial integrity.

Chinese Foreign Ministry said that the one-China policy has been clearly recognized by United Nations General Assembly Resolution 2758 of 1971.

They noted that since People’s Republic of China was founded in 1949 – 181 countries have established diplomatic relations with China on the basis of the one-China principle.

“The one-China principle is a universal consensus of the international community and a basic norm in international relations,” they added.
