The Maldives Correctional Services (MCS) with the Ministry of Education signed an agreement to provide education to children under the former’s care.

During a ceremony held on Wednesday, the agreement was signed by the Commissioner of Prisons Ahmed Mohamed Fulhu and the Permanent Secretary of the Education Ministry Ahmed Ali.

Speaking about this, the spokesperson for MCS Aminath Yusreen Ahmed said to Sun that the purpose of the agreement was to provide age-appropriate education to a child without any discrimination, despite being in detention under the Child Rights Act.

Under the agreement, the Education Ministry is mandated to do an academic assessment of a child within one month of being moved to any juvenile detention centre. The assessment is to be done with the assistance of MCS, and by teachers from a school on the island where the centre is located.

Moreover, the ministry has to create an assessment report based on the child’s standard, as well as create an individual learning plan, and a teaching plan for the extension of detention.

Meanwhile, the agreement assigns the responsibility of providing fees and ensuring security for the teachers and making sure the children attend classes and have all the necessary supplies needed.
