Another inmate has committed suicide while incarcerated, which was confirmed by Maldives Correctional Service on Sunday, March 23rd.
The prison watchdog authority confirmed that the prisoner is Ibrahim Shamweel, 23, S. Maradhoo.
Correctional Service said that its officers discovered the prisoner dead inside his cell around 16:20hrs. The prisoner reportedly committed suicide by hanging, and was later rushed to Maafushi Hospital where he was pronounced dead at 16:55hrs.
The authority confirmed the now deceased prisoner was serving a one-year and six months prison term for the conviction of intimidating a person with grievous bodily harm.
Upon the inmate’s suicide, the information was immediately relayed to Maldives Police Service, Inspection of Correctional Service, Human Rights Commission of Maldives (HRCM), National Integrity Commission, and Shamweel’s family.
Deaths and suicides at prison establishments have been gradually rising in recent years, with the most recent suicide inside a prison reported back on September 24, 2024.
Another incident was reported in August last year when an inmate under the custody of Maldives Police Service at Dhoonidhoo Jail committed suicide.
