The Maldives Correctional Service (MCS) has launched its new Strategic Action Plan, along with a revamped MCS portal and a centralized prisoner data management system, as part of efforts to modernize and strengthen the institution’s operations.
The three initiatives were inaugurated on Thursday by Homeland Minister Ali Ihusaan.
According to MCS, the projects mark an important step toward improving institutional management and expanding services through modern digital systems. The Corrections Strategic Action Plan was developed with financial support from the European Union and technical assistance from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).
MCS stated that aligning reforms with the new plan will help strengthen the prison system, support the reintegration of inmates under a structured framework, and enhance the skills and capabilities of officers and staff.
The new Prisoner Data Management System was developed with full support from UNODC. The system provides a centralized platform to manage all information related to prisoners and detainees, consolidating records into a single view. It also digitizes medical and personal files, reducing administrative workload and enabling faster information sharing with agencies such as the courts, the Prosecutor General’s Office, and the Maldives Police Service.

MCS said the new MyMCS portal modernizes the previous eService platform and makes services more accessible to the public. After logging in through eFaas, users can request criminal record clarifications, book meetings with inmates, apply for jobs, and send money to prisoners and detainees.
Speaking at the ceremony, Commissioner of Prisons Hassan Zareer said the projects reflect ongoing efforts to improve public services and emphasized the importance of having a clear roadmap to guide reforms. He noted that MCS had not previously seen major developments of this scale, and that officers and staff had long worked under challenging conditions to maintain safety and security.
Zareer expressed gratitude to UNODC and the European Union for their support.
