The no-confidence motion against Prosecutor General Hussain Shameem is set to be submitted to the Parliament during the next week.

Speaking to Sun, a member of Maldivian Democratic Party’s (MDP) Parliamentary Group revealed that work was ongoing to gather signatures in order to make the submission to the Parliament.

“We will submit the motion to the Parliament within next week.”

While MDP’s PG moved to dismiss Shameem with a vote of 21-17, Parliament Speaker and party leader Mohamed Nasheed has voiced his disapproval of this.

Following the voting - a list of MDP parliamentarians standing up in defence of PG Shameem was publicized on MDP’s National Council Whatsapp group.

The list was initiated by MDP’s former chairperson, West Henveiru MP Hassan Latheef through a text message in the Whatsapp group.

Currently, a total of 19 parliamentarians have listed their names on this list. Those that have added their names to the list are supporters of Nasheed.

Deputy speaker Eva Abdulla, who had also added her name to the list, sent a text message to MDP parliamentary group’s Whatsapp group on Tuesday stating she refused to follow whip lines issued without debate, no matter what the consequences.

Parliamentarians in favour of dismissing PG Shameem have criticized Nasheed for moving against the parliamentary group’s majority.

The no-confidence motion against Shameem had been submitted to the MDP’s parliamentary group on June 1.

MDP has yet to disclose the identity of the parliamentarian who presented the no-confidence motion or the reason for the decision.
