Planning Minister Mohamed Aslam said that the government was seeking an additional dredger for Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) in order to complete land reclamation projects on time.
Responding to a question by Kudahuvadhoo MP Ahmed Amir at the Parliament on Wednesday, Aslam said that MTCC had been contracted more projects than it had the capacity to complete, resulting in delays in completion of land reclamation projects.
“MTCC is the only company in Maldives with the capacity to conduct land reclamation projects. MTCC has been assigned a lot of land reclamation projects,” he said.
Aslam said that MTCC needed to expand its capacity in order to complete the projects on time.
“I have been informed MTCC is working on procuring an additional dredger. It will expand their capacity,” he said.
Aslam said that MTCC will be able to sign more projects currently on hold once it expands its capacity.
MTCC currently uses ‘Maha Jarraf’ a large dredger it procured back in 2017. The 92.95-meter long and 16.30-meter wide dredger has the capacity to dredge sand from up to 50 meters under water, and carry up to 3,700 cubic meters of sand.
