After more than three months of closure, the area between the Fish Market and Jetty No. 1 in Male' city has been redeveloped to modern standards and reopened to the public on Monday.

The project, carried out by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), widened the stretch of Boduthakurufaanu Magu to four lanes, installed fencing on both sides, and added features to accommodate wheelchair and trolley users. MTCC said the upgrades will ease traffic congestion and reduce flooding during heavy rains through a new stormwater drainage system.

Work on the segment began on August 22, 2024, after the Construction Ministry awarded MTCC a contract worth MVR 144.5 million with a completion timeline of one year and three months. Officials noted this is the first segment of the broader redevelopment project, with some roads already tarred and others still under construction.

The reopening comes as part of wider efforts to modernize Male's road network. Last year, Ameenee Magu was resurfaced to improve driving conditions, but within months, bumps and potholes emerged, raising safety concerns for motorists and pedestrians.
