Japan commits grant for provision of 8 ambulances to Maldives

Japan has committed a grant of USD 159,131 for the provision of eight reconditioned ambulances to Maldives. 

The grant contract was signed by Japanese Ambassador Takeuchi Midori and Maldivian State Minister for Health Dr. Shah Abdulla Mahir on Monday. 

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Shah said strengthening the emergency healthcare system in Maldives was one of the most important works being carried out by the Health Ministry.

Shah said that the assistance by Japan comes at an opportune time. He said that the COVID-19 pandemic had served to reveal the loopholes in the emergency healthcare system. 

Meanwhile, Takeuchi, in her speech, expressed satisfaction at being able to assist Maldives improve its healthcare system.

The assistance was provided under Japan’s Grant Assistance for Grass-Roots Human Security Projects (GGP) scheme.   

Two of the ambulances will be sent to Hulhumale’, and the rest to islands outside the greater Male’ region.
