The government of Japan has gifted MVR 79 million (800 million Yen) worth equipment to Maldives’ Coastguard for utilization in maritime search and rescue operations.
The equipment was handed over by the Japanese Ambassador to the Maldives Takeuchi Midori and received by Defense Minister Ghassan Maumoon on behalf of the Maldivian government.
According to Maldives National Defense Force (MNDF) the gifted equipment is expected play a cruicial role in enhancing the Coastguard’s maritime search and rescue operations, safeguarding lives, and ensuring the safety of vessels navigating Maldivian waters.

The gifted equipment is valued at MVR 79.9 million (800 million Yen).
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Ghassan expressed gratitude to the Japanese government for the generous support, noting that the new equipment will significantly enhance the MNDF Coast Guard’s ability to respond swiftly and effectively to maritime emergencies.
Ambassador Takeuchi, who also spoke at the ceremony, highlighted Japan’s commitment to supporting the Maldives in enhancing its maritime capabilities, emphasizing the importance of collaboration in ensuring safer seas and fostering regional security.
MNDF said the gifting of equipment milestone in the long-standing bilateral relationship between Maldives and Japan, reflecting shared values and goals in maritime safety, resilience, and mutual cooperation.
