Maldives National University’s (MNU) Chancellor Dr. Hassan Hameed, on Thursday, has stated that the 56 percent increase in the salaries of teachers is a never-seen in the Maldives before type of a change.
In a tweet referencing to President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih’s remarks during the presidential address today announcing increment in salaries of teachers – Dr. Hameed said that it was a rightful promotion for teachers.
He added that such a change would garner interest amongst exemplary students to choose teaching as a career.
Dr. Hameed said that this is a road being paved to produce a skilled and educated generation.
At today’s presidential address, President Solih noted that it was one of his pledges to ensure fair wage for teachers.
“Starting from the month of May this year, I have made the decision to increase the salaries of all employees in the education sector. With this change, secondary teachers at a graduate level will have an increase in salary from MVR 12,628 to MVR 19,740 excluding overtime allowance. This is a 56 percent increase,” he had said.
MNU had recently launched a research report on teaching in the Maldives titled ‘Teaching as a Career: Perception, Value, and the Choice in the Maldives’.
According to MNU, the findings of the research show that the main concerns of teachers in the Maldives are linked to the low wage they receive compared to the long working hours and the hard work they do.
