Schools have closed for long holidays after report giving on Thursday, marking the conclusion of this academic year’s second and final term.

The new academic year is set to begin on January 27th, meaning students will get a break of one month and one day.

However, teachers will need to return to work two days before, on January 25th.

According to Education Ministry, at the start of this year’s academic year, there were some 84,000 students enrolled in schools across the Maldives and some 11,000 teachers working in schools, some 10,000 of whom are working in public schools.

The start of the academic year was changed to mid-year during the former administration, citing that December is the peak tourism season, making it hard for parents who work in resorts to spend the holidays with their children.

The incumbent administration reverted back the academic new year to January starting 2026 – a change which was one of President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s electoral pledges.

The biggest point of concern regarding the school holidays falling in mid-year had been the rainy weather usually associated with June and July, hindering travel.
