President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih on Friday arrived in Sh. Komandoo to officially kick-off Maldivian Democratic Party's (MDP) campaign for the Komandoo by-elections.

A special gathering is slated to be held to start the campaign for MDP's candidate for the Komandoo parliament seat Mohamed Rashid.

Prior to applying for the by-elections, Rashid had served as Secretary-General of Sh. Foakaidhoo Council. He had also served as President of Foakaidhoo Council over the past three terms.

He will run in the by-elections against the PPM candidate- former Deputy Home Minister Moosa Fathuhy Adam and MNP candidate Abdul Hannan Idrees.

Meanwhile, former President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom is scheduled to visit Sh. Komandoo next week to take part in PPM candidate Moosa Fathuhy Adam’s campaign for the Komandoo seat.

Deputy leader of PPM’s coalition partner PNC, MP Adam Shareef Umar said Yameen is scheduled to visit Komandoo on January 14 and will take part in the door-to-door campaign event as well.

The Komandoo parliamentary seat was left vacant following the death of MP Hussain Waheed on December 14. He died at the age of 53 years in a hospital in Male’ City after a year-long battle with cancer.

The by-election is scheduled to be held on February 5.
