Two direct contacts of a teenager who recently tested positive for COVID-19 in ADh. Mahibadhoo have also tested positive for the virus, prompting health authorities to place the island under monitoring for the third time since the current pandemic began.

ADh. Atoll Regional Hospital’s manager Bunyamin Hassan told Sun on Saturday that the initial case was a 17-year-old boy with no recent travel history who was tested at the island’s flu clinic last week. The hospital tested 40 random samples in response to the case, the results of all of which came back negative.

Meanwhile, the results of two of the boy’s direct contacts have come back positive for COVID-19 – his mother and father.

Authorities are now working on testing the direct contacts of the boy’s parents.

Bunyamin said that 87 percent of the eligible adult population in Mahibadhoo have been fully vaccinated.

There are currently 17 residential islands outside the greater Male’ region under monitoring, including ADh. Hangnameedhoo, which neighbors Mahibadhoo.
