Man arrested for travelling to Vilufushi in violation of guidelines

Maldives Police Service has arrested a person who travelled from Male’ City to Th. Vilufushi in violation of orders issued by Health Protection Agency (HPA) to prevent the spread of the new coronavirus.

The police identified the person as a 35-year-old Maldivian man.

He was arrested under court order.

The police said the case is under further investigation.

The police previously arrested two people who travelled from Male’ City to a resort and then to R. Alifushi. They travelled in violation of HPA’s guidelines and without obtaining necessary permits.

The police also recently arrested a 35-year-old woman from the Feydhoo district of Addu City for violation of HPA’s guidelines.

Travel from the greater Male’ region – the epicenter of the coronavirus outbreak in Maldives – requires special permission from HPA.

HPA requires all those who travel from the greater Male’ region to residential islands to undergo 14 days of mandatory quarantine and testing clearing them of the new coronavirus before they are allowed to mingle with the local population.

Maldives has 6,370 confirmed coronavirus cases, including 145 new cases recorded on Thursday. 3,915 of the patients have since recovered, while 24 have died from complications.

The country now has 2,431 active cases. 161 coronavirus patients are hospitalized.
