Officer stationed in Male’ Prison tests positive for coronavirus

Maldives Correctional Service announced on Tuesday that an officer stationed at Male’ Prison has tested positive for the new coronavirus.

According to Maldives Correctional Service, Health Protection Agency (HPA) confirmed the positive test results on August 5.

Maldives Correctional Service said that while the officer did not have contact with any detainees, he did have contact with several other prison officers.

According to Maldives Correctional Service, prison officers identified as contacts have been placed under quarantine in accordance with HPA’s instructions. They said they monitoring the condition of the prison officers, and that the quarantine period for some of the officers have ended.

 Maldives Correctional Service said it continues to have measures in place in prisons to prevent a potential coronavirus outbreak within the inmate population, and that no inmate in their custody have yet to test positive for the new coronavirus.

Maldives has 5,909 confirmed coronavirus cases, including 124 new cases on Monday. 3,488 patients have since recovered, while 24 have died from complications.

The country currently has 2,389 active cases. 138 patients are hospitalized.
