Rehabilitation training under the rehabilitation framework’s phase 1 has been commenced for the 13th batch of inmates to receive rehabilitation from the Maldives Correctional Services has been commenced.
A total of 89 inmates took part in the training session commenced in Maafushi Prison yesterday.
The training programs were suspended amidst the spread of COVID-19 in the Maldives.
This is the first program to be commenced since then.
The purpose of the four-phase rehabilitation program is to provide education, skills, and rehabilitate inmates when they are ready to venture back into the community. The inmates would then have the necessary skills to earn a living and leave the criminal environment.
Inmates are taught by tutors from educational institutions, Prison Officers, and tutors from the Institute for Correctional Studies. The current phase will be taught by Prison Officers only. Courses taught under the program are accredited by the Maldives Qualification Authority (MQA).
