The first test flights to the regional airport developed in Sh. Funadhoo has been conducted.
The first test flights were conducted by national carrier Maldivian and carried Transport Ministry’s State Minister Ahmed Zuhair, senior officials of Civil Aviation Authority and Island Aviation.
The first flight to Funadhoo landed around 8:10 today. The airport is expected to be inaugurated on February 1. Operations will first see three flights to the airport per week, which will be increased to three per day by the end of March.
The airport developed by MTCC in Funadhoo has a runway of 1,200 meters in length and 30 meters in width. The taxiway has a length of 90 meters and an apron of 50 meters in width and 150 meters in length was also developed at the airport.
While the airport in Funadhoo nears its opening, the airport developed in the neighboring atoll of N. Maafaru was opened on December 1.
Transport Minister Aishath Nahula has previously stated that four more airports will be opened in 2020. They include the airport in Funadhoo, Lh. Madivaru airport, G.Dh Maavarulu airport, and H.A Hoarafushi airport.
