Shameem appointed as Prosecutor General

Hussain Shameem from H. Hiyaakan has been officially appointed as the Prosecutor General.

Shameem was appointed to the post following the resignation of former PG Aishath Bisham on November 28. Shameem received the letter of appointment from the President yesterday after the Parliament voted overwhelmingly in favor of his appointment. Shameem got the nod of 74 MPs in the Parliament.

Shameem has stated in the interview for the post in the Parliament’s Judiciary Committee that he was going to reform the office and resolve the issue of unlawful detainment. He also stated that he was going to impose a one-hour reading time for the employees of the PG Office.

Having graduated from the Azhar University in Egypt with a Bachelor of Arts in Shariah and Law, Shameem went on to obtain a masters in Criminal Law and Criminal Justice from the University of Sussex. He has previously served as the deputy prosecutor general and was involved in the formation of the penal code of Maldives and creating awareness for the act.
