The Speaker of the Parliament Mohamed Nasheed has recommended that if a school is built in V. Rakeedhoo, it should be named after Ibthihaal.
Nasheed made this suggestion in today’s parliamentary session that saw Education Minister Dr. Aishath Ali answer questions from MPs. Minister Aishath was responding to a question by Dhiggaru MP Ikraam Hassan who noted that Rakeedhoo has spent 12 years without a school. MP Ikram queried the government’s plans for the island from the Minister.
Minister Aishath then responded that she had visited the island and witnessed an extremely sad situation on the island. She noted that the government was working very hard to build a school in Rakeedhoo and were currently undertaking a feasibility survey.
“We are surveying how feasible it is to build a school on the island. Which grades we can start teaching in school. The work is being conducted at a very rapid rate.” said the Minister.
This was when the Speaker of the Parliament suggested naming the school after Ibthihaal.
“If a school is built in Rakeedhoo, I believe that it is very appropriate to name the school after Ibthihaal.” said the Speaker.
Ibthihaal was a three-year-old child who was found cruelly murdered inside his house in Rakeedhoo in 2015. The state has accused Ibthihaal’s mother Afiya of the brutal murder.
