Naifaru MP Ahmed Shiyam has alleged that the Speaker of the Parliament and former President Mohamed Nasheed is influencing the verdict in the trial of former President Yameen.
Shiyam stated so in today’s parliamentary session during the debate before the report regarding unfinished cases in the criminal court was presented.
Addu Meedhoo MP Rozaina Adam stated that the JSC should investigate the senior judge of Criminal court Ahmed Hailam. The JSC has today begun disciplinary proceedings against Judge Hailam regarding a cartoon sent by the judge to a Viber group of the Criminal Court.
This issue of judge Hailam was raised in the parliament today. Hinnavaru MP Jeehaan Mahmood also supported MP Rozaina’s statements before she was cut off by a point of order raised by MP Shiyam. MP Shiyam alleged that “everything regarding the judge was finished” by the Speaker Nasheed before alleging that the Speaker was influencing in the trial of President Yameen.
“You (Speaker) left the Parliament to go to JSC. You (Speaker) have already decided everything about the case tomorrow regarding the judge (Judge Hailam), before returning to the Parliament. You (Speaker) are also presiding over the Parliament when the report concerning the judge (Criminal Court’s report) is read. So I don’t know what you (Speaker) are trying to do.” said Shiyam.
Shiyam also alleged that it was the Speaker who made an activist tweet about the cartoon posted by the judge in the Viber group and that the Speaker was trying to influence the trial tomorrow using JSC.
“You (Speaker) are trying to directly influence the trial tomorrow with an MDP branch named JSC which is presided over by you and your lawyers amongst others. You are now dipping your hands and feet and head into the courts. So, I advise you to stop this.” said Shiyam.
MP Rozaina then stated that a judge with this standard could rule fairly and that JSC should think about the judge in the case of former President Yameen. Mahibadhoo MP Ahmed Thariq then responded to Rozaina and called on her to “stop playing dramas” regarding the trial tomorrow.
