PPM deputy leader Ahmed Shiyam has accused the Judicial Service Commission of political corruption, and has called it a branch of ruling MDP.

Shiyam, who serves as the parliamentary representative for Naifaru constituency, made the comment during the parliamentary debate on the appointment of a Supreme Court justice this Wednesday.

He said that JSC had become a higher court than the Supreme Court, and that there was no more hope of justice in Maldives.

“This court is composed of Speaker Nasheed and [President] Ibrahim Mohamed Solih, and then one of his people, one of his family members, his lawyers and others. Isn’t this so?” said Shiyam.

Shiyam said that President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih had come to power with the promise of establishing justice in Maldives, but that he had yet to see justice being established.

He said that MDP’s actions were causing embarrassment to Maldives in the international community.

“There’s only nepotism in this nation. There’s only a family rule in this nation. There’s no justice in this nation. There is no need for MDP to act this way, and then talk of justice in front of the Maldivian people,” said Shiyam.

PNC’s deputy leader Mohamed Saeed also voiced criticism against JSC.

Saeed, who serves as the parliamentary representative for Maavashu constituency, said that JSC only lacked Amaal Clooney – who had one provided legal representation to Speaker Nasheed.

He accused MDP of tampering with judicial independence in the name of establishing judicial independence and reform.

“We are witnessing the MDP, through its Agenda 19, very deceitfully, working to impeach the Chief Justice and others on the Supreme Court bench,” said Saeed.

He said that the MDP had enslaved the nation and destroyed its judiciary.

He said that the JSC had been enslaved to levels which Maldives had never experienced in its entire history.
