Severe flooding affects Southern Maldives

Several islands have reported severe flooding due to torrential and thunderstorms affecting Southern Maldives.

Maldives Meteorological Service has issued yellow alert over four Southern atolls; G. A. Atoll, G. Dh. Atoll, Fuvahmulah City and Addu City. It forecasts torrential rain and thunderstorms to prevail in the area from noon to at least 4 pm this Saturday.

MNDF Southern Area officers are working on draining the flood water and stacking sandbags at entrances of residencies to prevent flood water from sweeping in and destroying property.

According to Maldives Meteorological Service, the current bad weather are effects of the Hulhangu Monsoon (South West Monsoon).

It forecasts scattered showers and a few thunderstorms across Maldives.

Records collected by Maldives Meteorological Service show 140.3 millimeters of rain fell on G. A. Gemanafushi from 8 pm on Friday to 8 am on Saturday. 110.9 millimeters of rain fell on Gan, Addu City; and 92.5 millimeters of rain fell on G. A. Kooddoo.
