Ali Shareef, the deputy director general of Maldives Meteorological Service and the Maldives’ first trained weather forecaster, has retired after 47 years of service.
The Meteorological Service issued a statement on Tuesday thanking him for his service.
Ali began his career in meteorology in 1978 as a meteorological observer.
According to Meteorological Service, Ali was the first trained local weather forecaster who issued aviation and sea area forecasts for the Maldives.
The Meteorological Service hailed him for emphasizing building strong collaborative relationships with regional and international agencies, significantly contributing to the growth of the agency.
According to Meteorological Service, Ali was the main pioneer in the negotiations that led to the creation of the Regional Integrated Multi-Hazard Early Warning System for Africa and Asia (RIMES), and represented the agency at various regional and international platforms.
“Ali’s commitment, dedication, professionalism, and valuable contributions over the past 47 years have greatly benefitted Maldives Meteorological Service,” reads the statement.
Ali also received the National Award for Public Service last year in recognition of his contributions to the nation.
