Commissioner of Police, Mohamed Hameed (MC Hameed) has announced the police will be issuing an official statement regarding the revelations made by the presidential commission on investigation of murders and enforced disappearances regarding the 2014 abduction and murder of journalist Ahmed Rilwan Abdulla “soon”.
Hameed is back in Maldives following an official visit to the UK for discussions regarding the ongoing campaign to reform the police.
In a tweet this Monday, Hameed said he was back in Maldives “after a series of productive meetings with our partners in policing and counter terrorism landscape of the UK”.
He said that the police will be issuing an official statement regarding the revelations made by the presidential commission on Sunday “soon”.
“MPS will be issuing an official statement soon with respect to the revelations made by the Presidential Commission. A lot to do to win public confidence!” said Hameed.
The presidential commission, on Sunday, announced that it had evidence Rilwan was abducted from Hulhumale’ where he resided, forced into a car, put on board a dinghy boat, transferred to another vessel, and then murdered by strangulation in the early hours of August 8, 2014.
It also announced that the Al-Qaeda branch in Maldives was responsible for both Rilwan’s abduction and murder.
The commission’s revelations marked the first official confirmation from a State source that Rilwan, who had been missing since August 8, 2014, had been murdered.
The commission also announced that it found evidence of links between several large-scale robberies and several businesses in Maldives with international terrorist organizations.
