Woman arrested for physical assault of son

Maldives Police Service has arrested a woman for suspected physical assault of her five-year-old son.

A media official at Maldives Police Service reported to “Sun” that the 27-year-old woman was arrested from Male’ City last Sunday.

The woman has been remanded to 10 days in police custody by the Criminal Court.

The most prominent case of abuse by a woman on her son in recent Maldivian history is the case of Mohamed Ibthihaal. Ibthihaal, 3, was found dead in his home at V. Rakeedhoo with signs of physical abuse on January 28, 2015. His mother, Aafiya Mohamed Manik, has confessed to beating Ibthihaal to the point of death, has been charged with homicide.
