Teacher charged with sexually abusing students in Kolhufushi; faces up to 60 years in prison

The Prosecutor General’s Office has filed charges against a teacher accused of sexually assaulting students on Kolhufushi island.

Charges were submitted to the Kolhufushi Magistrate Court on Wednesday against Shuaib Abdullah Sadhaa, of M. Kolhufushi. According to the Prosecutor General’s Office, the offences were committed while he was employed as a health and physical education teacher at the island’s school.

Prosecutors have filed five charges in total:  

• Two counts of sexual assault on a child in a position of trust  

• Two counts of showing pornography to a child in a position of trust  

• One count of possession of pornography in the Maldives

The charges state that Shuaib allegedly touched two students with sexual intent and showed them a video containing pornographic content.

If convicted on all counts, the offences carry a combined sentence of 60 years, one month and six days, according to the Prosecutor General’s Office.
