Japan boosts Maldives’ coastal protection efforts with new MVR 70 million sea wall reconstruction project

Japan and the Maldives have signed a MVR 70 million agreement to repair the eastern and northern sea walls of Male’ City.

According to the Infrastructure Ministry, the project will be carried out under the Japanese government’s Economic and Social Development Programme.

The contract was awarded to Toyo Construction Co., Ltd., a major Japanese marine and civil engineering company.

State Minister Thoaam Mohamed signed the agreement on behalf of the Infrastructure Ministry, while Izawa Kan, Deputy General Manager, signed on behalf of Toyo Construction Co., Ltd.

The consultancy work for the project will be undertaken by Oriental Consultants Global Co., Ltd.

The contract value is 700 million Japanese yen, approximately MVR 70 million, and the project is scheduled to be completed within 487 days.

Japan has long been a key partner in coastal protection efforts in the Maldives. Last September, the Japanese government signed an agreement to provide USD 140,000 in grant assistance to repair sections of the outer sea wall.
