34 child neglect cases in October

Statistics published by the Ministry of Social and Family Development show that 34 child neglect cases were reported in October.

According to the statistics published on Monday, the Ministry received and attended to 250 cases in October.

Violence against children accounted for 101 of these cases. First on the list was neglect, recorded in 34 cases affecting 16 girls and 18 boys. Second came sexual abuse, with 23 cases involving 17 girls and six boys. Third was physical abuse, with 14 cases involving nine girls and five boys.

Remaining cases include 12 cases involving emotional abuse, 11 cases of victims of bullying, four cases of witnesses to domestic violence and one case each of exploitation of children by organized crime groups, blackmail and cyber grooming.

A total of 12 child rights violations were reported in October, including six cases of refusal to send children to school.

In October, a total of 155 children were under state care.

The Ministry also recorded 45 cases of gender-based or domestic violence in October. They include 20 cases pertaining to physical abuse in first, followed by 16 cases pertaining to emotional abuse in second and four cases pertaining to rape in third.  

The Ministry’s helplines – 1412 (child help hotline) and 1421 (social service helpline)  – received 2,105 calls in October.
