Education Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu has announced plans to launch a mega campaign next year to train teachers on the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the classroom.
He made the announcement on Saturday morning at the inauguration of the Principals’ Conference 2025 underway at CROSSROADS Maldives.
Addressing the conference, Shafeeu said that the only path to national enlightenment is to produce critical thinkers.
He said that this requires the implementation of modern changes within the education sector, including the integration of AI.
Shafeeu said that a mega campaign will be launched next year to train teachers on AI use.
“We have allotted a suitable period during Ramadan for professional development. We plan on providing teachers with the training they need to learn the skills need to teach various subjects with the use of AI technology and improve their AI literacy,” he said.
Shafeeu said the country needs capable teachers to nurture students who are patriotic, critical thinkers, and well-equipped for life.
He said that the Education Ministry has also been implementing changes to the curriculum towards that purpose, and will be carrying out major content revisions next year.
Shafeeu also reiterated the government’s commitment to ensuring that no child is left behind when it comes to education.
The two-day Principals’ Conference, attended by principals from schools across the country, aims to strengthen education policies through ongoing dialogue and collaboration between school leaders and senior officials of the Education Ministry. Building on ideas previously shared by teachers and staff, the conference seeks to nurture students who are patriotic, critical thinkers, and well equipped for life.
The conference was inaugurated by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu, who was presented with a commemorative plaque.
According to the information released by the National Bureau of Statistics last year, the Maldives has over 11,000 teachers, of whom some 8,000 are locals and the other 2,000 are expatriates.
Over 3,000 of these teachers are based in the capital Male’, while the remaining 8,000 are based in schools across the Maldives.
