The Criminal Court on Wednesday sentenced a man to one-month and 20 days in prison after he pled guilty to driving around after sticking a nine-inch knife in the front cover of his motorcycle.
Mathiu Mohamed Shakeeb, a native of L. Gan, was charged with possession of a dangerous weapon or sharp-edged instrument in public without a valid reason under the Act on Prohibition of Intimidation and Possession of Dangerous Weapons Sharp-edged Instruments, over an incident that took place in 2022.
According to the state, Mathiu had been about to get on a motorcycle parked outside the Kuda Henveiru Field in Male’ on April 11, 2022, when he got scared after he saw police officers there and attempted to walk away.
His behavior drew suspicion from the police, who stopped him and searched the motorcycle, upon which they discovered a nine-inch knife in the front cover.
The charge carried a prison sentence of six to 12 months in prison.
However, Mathiu pled guilty to the charge under a plea deal with the state for a lesser sentence of one month and 20 days in prison.
