Phone theft suspect claims it was sold to him “by a child”

Criminal Court, on Saturday, has remanded an individual suspected of stealing a phone for 15 days in custody.

The suspect has been identified as a 37-year-old Maldivian man: Safwan Ali, Th. Thimarafushi.

According to his remand order, evidence has been submitted warranting suspicion that Safwan committed the theft. Speaking in his defense, Safwan claimed that the alleged stolen phone was sold to him by a “child” whose name he is unable to recall.

The order further noted that the police stated the phone Safwan claimed he lost was actually found in his possession.

Safwan has a prior criminal record in similar cases.

Theft is among the most common types of crime in the Maldives.
