Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has commenced land reclamation works in K. Gulhi.
The reclamation works were commenced by MTCC’s managing director Ahmed Saudee in a ceremony held at the island on Friday night. The ceremony was also attended by Gulhi Council’s president Moosa Safeel and other senior officials from the council and the MTCC.
According to MTCC, the Gulhi land reclamation and shore protection project is valued at MVR 89.63 million.
The project involves reclaiming 10.15 hectors of land, building a 10,962-meter rock boulder revetment, a 362-meter geobag revetment, and installing 88 meters of groynes.
Gulhi is an island of some 800 people that lies close to the capital Male’.
In a statement announcing the commencement of reclamation works, MTCC noted that despite the small size and population of Gulhi, the island’s beauty holds great appeal for tourists.
Gulhi has some 15 guesthouses, but struggles with a shortage of land to build homes and expand business activities.
MTCC said the project will therefore provide a huge solution to the challenges facing the island.
