The former Controller General of Immigration, Mohamed Shamman Waheed, arrested for corruption allegations has received a 15-day remand on Saturday, March 22nd.

On Saturday evening, Shamman was arrested immediately after he visited Sergeant Adam Haleem Criminal Investigation Building to provide statement. Maldives Police Service said Shamman was arrested on charges of corruption, abuse of power and coercion for illicit profiteering from expatriates.

Several other officers from Maldives Immigration are suspected of involvement as well.

Police said it had collected plausible evidences to reasonably prove Shamman’s offences, and noted that the over half million in Maldivian currency discovered the former Controller General’s home was misappropriated from an expatriate released from Immigration’s detention on his order.

Authorities had reportedly recovered more than MVR 530,000 in physical cash from Shamman’s home. Besides the money, several electronic items were brought under police custody during the authority’s raid to Shamman’s home and three other individuals were arrested in suspicion of their involvement.

‘Sun’ Online inquired about the case from police, and was notified that the suspects were summoned for remand hearing. Out of the three, two had received 10 days in remand, and the third received a three-day remand.
