The Nepalese cook involved in a violent altercation with his colleague in the kitchen of a café in Male’ City on Tuesday has been detained by the police.
Both sustained injuries in the incident and were taken to the Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
A police spokesperson said that the Nepalese cook involved in the altercation, Siddhartha Gurung, 24, has been arrested.
According to the police, the Criminal Court remanded him in custody of the police for five days when presented before the court for his remand hearing.
Bangladeshi kitchen helper remains in serious condition and is being treated in the IGMH’s ICU.
A spokesperson from the IGMH declined to provide details regarding the injuries sustained by the two men, but said that it “appear to be inflicted with a sharp instrument.”
Videos of the incident show the two men, who are both bleeding, wrestling with each other on the kitchen floor. A third man is seen intervening to remove a knife from one of them.
The case is under investigation by the police.
A similar incident in April 2022 resulted in the death of a young Bangladeshi waiter. The tragedy took place at a café in Hulhumale’. The café’s chef, a Pakistani national, is awaiting trial for the murder.
