The father who was stabbed by his mentally ill son on Sunday night at AA. Ukulhas has been discharged from hospital after treatment.
Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH)’s spokesperson told Sun that the father has been discharged after treatment, while the son remained hospitalized for further treatment.
The spokesperson did not disclose when the father was discharged, nor the details of the treatment the son is undergoing.
However, Ukulhas council president Shaukath Ibrahim told Sun on Monday that the young man was receiving psychological treatment.
On the night of the accident, Shaukath had identified the attacker as a 26-year-old man who had been undergoing treatment for mental illness since he was teenager, while the father is over 60 years old.
According to Shaukath, the father sustained injuries to his stomach and arm in Sunday night’s attack.
Both of them were later transferred from Ukulhas to IGMH for further treatment.
Shaukath reported that the young man had previously received treatment abroad for his mental illness and required regular injections as part of his ongoing care. However, he noted that the young man often refused to take the injection, and his most recent dose had been overdue. As a result, the family sought guidance from the island’s health centre, the local council, and authorities in Malé.
He detailed that health personnel visited the young man on Sunday evening and administered the injection. He became agitated shortly afterward and attacked his father once the health workers had left, Shaukath said.
According to the police, the incident was reported at approximately 22:20pm, and the 26-year-old man has been arrested in connection with this case. However, he has since been released from custody.
