The Maldives Industrial Fisheries Company (MIFCO) purchased over 8,000 metric tons of fish in January this year – marking the company’s biggest purchase in a January in nearly three decades.

In a post on X on Monday morning, the Fisheries Ministry announced that MIFCO purchased 8,324 metric tons of tuna from local fishermen in January.

According to the ministry, it marks the highest quantity of fish to be purchased by MIFCO in a January since 1997.

In mid-January, MIFCO announced that fishing had improved across the Maldives, resulting in an increase in fish purchases by the company.

Information shared by MIFCO shows the company purchased an average 280 metric tons of fish daily in January.

The improvement in fishing comes after a decline in purchases by MIFCO at the end of last year.
