According to Maldives Meteorology (MET Office), the highest rainfall in the last 24 hours was recorded from Male’ City.
MET released details about the weather conditions of the last 24 hours, noting Male’ recorded 130.7 millimeters of rainfall from 08:00hrs on Friday, January 10th to 08:00hrs on Saturday, January 11th.
Second highest rainfall was recorded from Hulhule’ with 79.5 millimeters, and third from Alif Alif atoll Thoddoo with 70.3 millimeters of rainfall.
The heavy rainfall in Maldives capital left the streets flooded, which resulted in Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) along with its Fire and Rescue department helping drain the water off the roads. The authority was pumping water from the following locations:
Besides these locations, MNDF has been draining water from the roads in two other locations with five additional pumps as well. The authority reports draining 6,385 tons of water until 06:00hrs on Saturday morning.
Additionally, officers of Male’ area command have been installing sand bags in two locations, while the authority extended assistance to 46 residences.
MET issued a yellow alert effect until 15:00hrs on Saturday for regions between Shaviyani and Meemu atolls.
The weather forecast authority reports northern and central parts will experience rainfall and thunder, with significant rainfall for some of the islands in these regions. MET also forecasts rough seas for majority of the country.
