Pres requests fresh impetus from SAARC to combat climate change

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has requested South Asian Association for Regional Corporation (SAARC) to put fresh impetus on climate change combatting efforts.

President Muizzu urged this in a message of greetings sent to SAARC on the occasion the 40th Charter Day of the organization, in which he extended greetings to the Secretary General, the Secretariat, affiliated institutions of the SAARC, and the people of South Asia.

In his message, President Muizzu said that since its inception, SAARC has championed the cause of improving the lives of South Asians. He took note of the principles and values enshrined in the SAARC Charter, aimed at fostering peace and prosperity in the region.

Speaking in this regard, Muizzu called for reinvigorating the commitment to addressing critical issues such as climate change, public health, and economic inequality. He further emphasized the importance of prioritizing sustainable development, innovation, resilient infrastructure, and connectivity.

Concluding his message, President Muizzu reaffirmed the country’s commitment to building a dynamic and more inclusive SAARC, dedicated to fulfilling shared aspirations and promoting a brighter, prosperous future for the South Asian people.

The SAARC Charter Day is celebrated on December 8th every year.

Member countries of SAARC include India, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Nepal, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and the Maldives.
