Safeguarding the Maldives’ national identity is crucial to maintaining the country’s independence, says Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef.
Hussain made the remark at the inauguration of the College of Nationalism’s first conference ‘Kalhuohkunmi – Dhivehi Gaumiyyathuge Dharubaaru’ – held at the Islamic University of Maldives (IUM) on Saturday morning.
Addressing the gathering, Hussain noted that the conference marks the first time for a gathering focused on discussions and exchange of information on the subject of national identity to be held in the Maldives in recent history.
He described it as an important and innovative step taken to safeguard Maldives’ national identity and raise awareness regarding it.
Safeguarding Maldives’ national identity is the most crucial measure needed for the Maldives to remain an independent and civilized country for the generations to come, he said.
He said that all Maldivians must take pride in Maldivian national identity.
“I am certain that the conference that begins today will see the presentation of important information on fields related to Maldivian national identity of the Maldivian people, academic discussions and new and innovative ideas,” he said.
Hussain said that the Maldivian people are lucky to have their own language, script, culture, customs and traditional professions, noting that these are things that not all countries have.
He said that it is not just the country’s natural wonders that sets it apart.
“I believe that we must showcase to the world the aspects of our national identity such as our proud history, traditions, the hard work of our ancestors and the beauty of the Dhivehi language as things that enhance the Maldives’ appeal. We must show each and every tourist who visits this country the peacefulness of the country and the friendship and good disposition of the Maldivian people through action,” he said.
He named the protection of Maldives’ national identity as one of the top priorities for President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu. He said that this was the reason for the decision to include nationalism in the curriculum.
The College of Nationalism, known as ‘Dhivehi Qaumiyyathuge Isvaru’, is a college dedicated to teaching the principles and pillars of nationalism. The college will be holding biannual conferences to spread the knowledge of national identity.
