The national weather agency forecasts strong winds and rough seas across the Maldives starting Wednesday and prevailing for the next five days.

In a weather briefing on Sunday afternoon, the Maldives Meteorological Service said that the depression over the Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify and move northwestwards within the next 24 hours, and continue its northwestward trajectory towards Tamil Nadu and Sri Lanka.

There is also a low-pressure area situated over the far southeast of the Maldives.

“The combined effects of these systems will result in strong winds impacting the country starting Wednesday and persisting for the following five days,” said the weather agency.

Average winds are projected to reach 15 to 25 miles per hour in southern atolls and 13 to 23 miles per hour in central and northern atolls.

“During this period, seas will be rough in all areas,” added the agency.

The weather agency urged seafarers to exercise caution during this period. It also urged the public to take appropriate measures to mitigate the potential impact and damage from strong winds and rough seas.

The Maldives has been experiencing widespread rain since last week. The bad weather resulted in flooding in Lh. Kurendhoo.
