The construction of the new Criminal Court in Hulhumale’ will be done by April next year, says President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.
The current Criminal Court building in Male’ City is severely run down and has limited space, often resulting in trials getting delayed. The Criminal Court is set to be relocated to Hulhumale’, once the construction of a new building is complete.
In his address at the Republic Day function on Sunday evening, President Muizzu said that construction work will be done around March or April next year.
He said that the relocation to the new building will considerably speed up the work of the court.
He also highlighted on additional efforts to address space constraints within the judiciary, including the construction of a Superior Court complex in Hulhumale’. President Muizzu said that funds have been allocated in the state budget to begin construction next year.
He added that land was allocated from Male’ last week to construct a new Supreme Court building.
President Muizzu also noted that judicial staff will receive salary increases along with the rest of civil servants next year.
“A sincere government will empower the judiciary, ensuring it operates independently, without relying on external forces, and without having to beg and plead. You will see this happening, In Sha Allah,” he said.
In his address, President Muizzu said that since taking office, his administration has refrained from interfering in judicial matters and will continue to uphold judicial autonomy.
He added that the government is committed to addressing the judiciary’s needs.
