A national program has been launched to train teachers.
The ‘National Teacher Training Program’ was launched by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu during a special ceremony held on Thursday morning. During the ceremony, the President also presented scholarship documents to students enrolled in the program.
The main purpose of the program is to resolve the biggest obstruction faced in the Maldivian education sector; the shortage of teachers. It aims to increase the number of students choosing teaching as a career and elevate education quality by enhancing teacher training.

The program is aimed towards students completing their secondary education.
Over 135 students expressed interest and participated in this program this year.
Under the program, the students will be trained for subjects where there are difficulties in recruiting teachers.
Thursday’s launching ceremony was also attended by Education Minister Dr. Ismail Shafeeu and senior officials from the government, colleges and universities.
Prior to this, information sessions on the National Teaching Training Program were held for students studying in secondary grades.
It is an electoral pledge of President Muizzu to launch a teacher training program on a national-scale to ensure teachers employed across Maldivian schools are locals.
While the shortage of capable teachers remains the biggest obstruction faced in the education sector – Education Ministry has previously revealed the need for over 2,000 teachers for the sector of which 250 are for primary grades.
