VP: Maldives deeply committed to strengthening democratic norms

Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef states Maldives is deeply committed to promoting good governance and strengthening democratic norms. 

He made the remark while speaking at the Executive Session of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).

VP Latheef, while emphasizing democracy, human rights, peace, tolerance, and respect for diversity as the pillars upon which societies thrive, said these values foster understanding and reinforce the rule of law and good governance.

He affirmed Maldives’ commitment to build a robust democratic system, which he said has been demonstrated by the successful completion of four cycles of free and fair, presidential, parliamentary and local council elections in the country.

On this note, he extended his gratitude to the Commonwealth Secretariat for their pivotal role in election observation. He also offered recommendations to strengthen the Commonwealth’s electoral support including training election officials and institutions, developing a comprehensive plan for whole-of-election-cycle approach. Election observation reports to be expedited and provision of technical assistance to implement recommendations of these Observer Groups, he added. 

VP Latheef also reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to engage with the Commonwealth to strengthen democratic institutions.

The Vice President is currently on an official visit to Samoa to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM). He is accompanied by a high-level government delegation. 

Earlier today, he attended the opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024 during which he participated in an official photograph of delegation heads attending the event.
