APEX assessment program launched at VIA

Airports Council International (ACI)’s Airport Excellence in Security (APEX Security) program has been launched at Maldives’ main airport, Velana International Airport (VIA).

The program was launched during a ceremony held at VIA’s Noovilu Seaplane Terminal on Sunday.

The purpose of APEX in Security program is to assess the safety and security measures in force at VIA and formulating an action plan on this front to enhance security standards. The assessment will be conducted over the course of five days.

Speaking at the ceremony held to launch the program on Sunday, Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL)’s CEO, Managing Director Ibrahim Shareef Mohamed underscored that VIA was developing at a fast pace with efforts also being undertaken to develop the airport’s infrastructure up to modern standards.

While the number of airlines operating to the airport and the number of passengers continue to increase day by day, Shareef emphasized that MACL have always allocated the greatest priority to ensure the safety and security of parties receiving the airport’s services.

He added that assessment launched was part of these efforts, adding a special action plan will be formulated based on the results of the assessment.

The Apex Security will pave the way to strengthen VIA’s security with the input of experts in security operations. The assessment is being conducted with assistance from the European Civil Aviation Conference (ECAC).

MACL affirmed its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of VIA in accordance with international standards. In this trajectory, the company has undertaken significant efforts to enhance safety and security standards at VIA in collaboration with international organizations such as the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), Airports Council International (ACI), and the International Air Transport Association (IATA).

Sunday’s ceremony to launch the Apex Security program was also attended by MACL’s deputy managing directors Mohamed Lamman and Mujthaba Latheef, senior officials from the company and the officials who will be conducting the assessment.
