STELCO partners with China’s TBEA for Maldives’ ‘biggest’ energy project

State Electric Company (STELCO) signed a Memorandum of Understanding with China’s TBEA Group on Wednesday, for a project that the state utility company hailed as “the biggest and most large-scale” energy project to be held in Maldives’ history.

According to STELCO, the agreement will see the establishment of a 150-megawatt dual-fuel power plant and a high-capacity transmission line connecting Male’ City, Vilimale’, Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi.

STELCO’s Managing Director Hussain Fahmy described it as a landmark agreement that is a significant step forward in enhancing the Maldives’ energy infrastructure.

Fahmy said that the high-capacity transmission line will connect Male’, Vilimale’, Gulhifalhu and Thilafushi, creating a robust network to meet the energy demands of these vital regions.

He added that the 150-megawatt dual-fuel power plant is expected to substantially increase STELCO’s power generation capabilities, ensuring a stable and reliable energy supply.

Fahmy said that STELCO’s collaboration with TBEA also aligns with the company’s vision for sustainable growth.

“This collaboration aligns with STELCO’s vision for sustainable growth, addressing the rising energy demands with innovative solutions for the future,” he said.

Fahmy also thanked President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu for his visionary leadership and unwavering support.
