STELCO has begun dispatching generators to 12 islands in preparation for the upcoming hot season and the month of Ramadan, when electricity demand typically surges.

The company said it is sending one genset to each island, though it did not disclose which islands are included. The shipment includes six 600 kW units, four 800 kW units, and two 1,000 kW units.

STELCO currently provides electricity to 35 islands, including Male', with coverage across Male' Atoll, Ari Atoll, and Felidhoo Atoll.

The company said the new gensets will improve service reliability in rural areas and enhance the overall quality of electricity supply.

Electricity consumption tends to rise during Ramadan, especially when it coincides with the hot season. Last year, despite discounted bills, many households reported higher usage and increased costs.

STELCO previously noted that consumption spikes during Ramadan are consistent year after year. The company expects similar trends this year, with Ramadan arriving just ahead of the peak season.

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu announced last November that domestic electricity bills during Ramadan would be capped at under MVR 400.

STELCO said the deployment of gensets is part of its broader effort to strengthen rural infrastructure and ensure uninterrupted service during high-demand periods.
