Abdul Majeed Mahir dies aged 96

Former Maldivian politician Abdul Majeed Mahir, who served multiple top government posts during his years of public service, has died at the age of 96.

Abdul Majeed died on Thursday.

Abdul Majeed was born to Aisha Didi of Fuvahmulah and Mohamed Didi of Velaanaage in Male’. He is the uncle of former Maldivian president Ibrahim Nasir, during whose administration he served in several top government posts, including deputy minister of finance.

He also served as the president of Male Municipality, and in the management of the Male’ Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC) during former president Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s administration.

Abdul Majeed was married to the late Ameena Mohamed Amin, the daughter of former Maldivian president Mohamed Amin. They have two children; former defense minister Ameen Faisal and former Maldivian high commissioner to the UK, Dr. Farhanaz Faisal.

He also has children born to later marriages.

The news of Abdul Majeed’s death has met with messages of condolences, including by President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu.

In a post on X on Thursday afternoon, President Muizzu described Abdul Majeed as an “honorable and hardworking” personality.

He recognized Abdul Majeed’s contributions to the nation, including his public service, his expertise in traditional medicine, and efforts to teach younger generations about Maldivian history, culture and heritage.

He conveyed condolences to the grieving family.
